Another camping experience in Texas that is not as well known as the Texas State Parks system is the LCRA Park system.  The Lower Colorado River Authority owns and maintains a group of parks in Texas with great amenities.  From day camping to full hookups, they seem to have it all.  This link may help you find out more about one of the best kept secrets in Texas.  We will be visiting Matagorda in May and I will give a first hand report of all the amenities and our weekend camping experience.
